Five hidden trails near our Topanga Hideout

Skip the crowded entrance. These five canyon trails start within walking distance of the cabin — most are quiet even on weekends.

If you've stayed at the Topanga Hideout, you've probably noticed the trail signs at the corner of the property. They lead to some of the best (and least-crowded) hikes in the canyon. Here are five worth your time.

1. Eagle Rock loop. 6.5 miles, ~1,300 ft of climbing. Big rock at the top with views to the ocean on a clear day. Start before 9 AM in summer — the climb gets toasty fast.

2. The Backbone Trail spur. Drop onto the Backbone from the Hideout's back gate, head east. Two miles in, there's a ridge with no signage — you can see the city on one side and the ocean on the other.

3. Garapito Trail. The forgotten one. Lush in spring, often empty even on Saturdays. Park at the Trippet Ranch lot and follow the creek north.

4. Henry Ridge. Quick out-and-back, 3 miles, mostly shaded. Best in the late afternoon when the light through the oaks is unreal.

5. The unmarked one. Ask the cabin host — it leads to a secret swimming hole we don't put on the internet.
